Colorectal Cancer Rapidly Rising In Those Under 55
In 2019, 20% of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer were under the age of 55, which is almost double the rate of under-55 diagnoses in 1995. Recent reports estimate that this rate will continue to rise, and the rates of advanced disease in people under 50 will grow by 3% annually.
“We are seeing a clear uptick in colorectal cancer in younger generations,” says Haddon Pantel, MD, a Yale Medicine colorectal surgeon.
Looking ahead, researchers from the American Cancer Society have predicted a total of 19,550 new under-50 colorectal cancer diagnoses in 2023 and recommend that most Americans be screened for this cancer at age 45— 5 years sooner than previous recommendations.
“Even if you're in your 20s or 30s,” Dr. Pantel says, “you should get checked out if you have rectal bleeding, if you have any change in your bowel habits, any change in appetite (like feeling “full” early), weight loss, or abdominal pain that is not explained.”
Flavonoid-Rich Tea Can Help Protect Against Heart Attack, Stroke
Consuming more flavonoids, which are naturally occurring antioxidants found in green and black teas, may lead to better health late in life, new research has found. This habit is specifically linked to a lower likelihood of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a major predictor of heart attack and stroke.
In the study, researchers evaluated flavonoid intake of 881 older women (median age of 80) as well as calcification of the abdominal aorta— the largest artery in the body. Those who consumed more flavonoids were far less likely to have extensive build-up of AAC.
Black tea was the largest source of flavonoids in the participants’ diets, although researchers stated that “non-tea flavonoid intake also appears to protect against extensive calcification of the arteries."
Other top flavonoid sources include berries, apples, citrus fruits, nuts, and grapes.

Mistletoe Extract Shows Promise Against Cancer
Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that has enjoyed use as an awkward holiday decoration for many years. It contains several active substances that appear to directly cause death to tumor cancer cells and stimulate an immune response. A small clinical trial demonstrated for the first time that mistletoe extract may be able to improve quality of life and disease control when used as a cancer support therapy in patients with advanced cancer. About ⅔ of people who have had one kidney stone will develop another one in the future. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce your risk of kidney stone formation, including by increasing your fluid intake, cutting down on your sodium/salt intake, and limiting animal protein in your diet. Good Quality Sleep Could Add Years to Your Life
Good sleep habits can be hard to stick with, but new research indicates that those who do sleep better— especially when they are young— are less likely to die early than those who don’t. Researchers pinpointed five specific beneficial sleep habits that contribute most to longevity. The habits were a mixture of quantity of sleep (i.e., how many hours per night) and quality of sleep (no trouble staying asleep, not using sleep medication, etc.). Those who had all five favorable habits were 30% less likely to die for any reason than those who had zero to one habits. (More)

Carbon is the second most common element in the human body after oxygen. It makes up around 18% of your body by mass, which means there’s enough of it to fill several thousand lead pencils, and your body can’t make proteins, carbs, or fats without it.
